our solution for

Brisbane Airside Driving Simulator

The Airside Driving Simulator that transformed training for airside operations at Brisbane Airport.

The challenge

Develop a virtual solution that could train airside operations officers on the new runway system incorporating taxiways, weather conditions, lighting systems and the existing infrastructure without physically accessing the site.

Our solution

As the pandemic overtook Brisbane Airport were seeking a way to ensure critical training of airside operations teams could continue remotely. The Airside Simulator solution was created leveraging the interactive 3D Model Spatial Media has also created of Brisbane Airport with a driving wheel and pedals to reflect the real-life driver experience in a virtual environment.

The solution developed the Airside Driving Simulator allows the instructors to create challenging situations for an officer and look at how they deal with them without physically being there. The software enables the instructor to create low frequency high impact scenarios and we have built in toggles for foreign object debris, wildlife and drones (UAV’s), weather conditions and construction cranes for doing obstacle limitation surface checks. The tool enables them to a safe controlled environment and if there is a mistake, they can look at how they can rectify without any impact to actual airport operations.

Today the Airside Driving Simulator is an important part of the training programs for both airport and other organisations using the airport – such as Airservices Australia's Aviation Rescue Fire Fighting Service (ARFFS). Before the opening of the new runway, 80 Aviation Rescue Fire Fighters trained on the simulator to practice their response in different scenarios and identify the best routes to get to different locations.

Airside Driving Simulator an important part of the training program

It can be storming outside. It could be night time. Any time of the day or night we can create these simulations. It’s very flexible.
