our solution for

Lake Lyell

Visuals to dispel the myths of the Lake Lyell utility-scale pumped hydro energy storage proposed on land the proponent EnergyAustralia owns near Lithgow.

The challenge

EnergyAustralia required high quality visual outputs that could effectively provide an understanding of the project design, and how it was designed to operate as well as convey the benefits to community, stakeholders and the wider public.

Our solution

The project infrastructure is intricate and will utilize water from the existing Lake Lyell dam, along with a newly constructed upper reservoir located behind the southern ridge of Mount Walker. This setup will support a utility-scale energy storage project capable of generating 335 megawatts (MW) of reliable, dispatchable energy—sufficient to power over 150,000 homes in New South Wales for up to 8 hours. The accompanying video animation clearly illustrates the project within its context, explains the pumped hydro engineering process, and highlights community benefits.

Lake Lyell is currently a site for recreational activities, which will continue alongside the project, as shown in the visual renders and animation. Concerns from nearby residents about the visual impact of the project, particularly regarding the upper reservoir dam wall and workers' accommodation, have been addressed through realistic 3D visualizations to scale.
